I just read that the Sami people of northern Scandinavia and Russia have 205 words for snow……so if you add a four letter word in front, you will have 410…..This is my view at the world from my work place today….

The local vintage car club got an invitation to visit Wallentins Restaureringsverksted. This is a restoration workshop that has Packard as a specialty, and a place well worth a visit. This time it was to see the progress on a MERCER seven seat car from 1918.

When you see a car from this age, in this stage, you can fully admire all the beautiful detailed parts that the car is made from.

Mercer was made in America from 1909 until 1925. Mercer was known for their high-performance cars.

This is a “hotel car” from the vest of Norway, Geiranger. The hotels at this spectacular place had big open American cars used to transport tourists around the area. Some of the cars have survived and can still be seen at the hotels.

Now it is time to plan your motorcycle trips for 2012 and even 2013.

If you have a bike made before 1954 and likes to do some long riding this is the rally for you, ca 1150 kilometers. “Trondhjemsridtet” have its origin from 1919 and was a race from Kristiania (now Oslo) to Trondheim and back.

In 2012 it will be a “try out” rally to get the timing and route tested. In 2013 it will be serious business.

On a motorcycle there are a lot of brand names and logos and if you look around your workshop there are even more.

On some items the logo ore number can tell you if it`s a part to fight for…….ore just leave it……

You can just like the shape of the trade mark and it can bring fuel to the fire for the “that’s not right brigade”.

When I saw this bike two weeks ago it was only bits and pieces in buckets and boxes. The Ariel had been stored and mixed with several other bikes for decades. But after some late night puzzle Hans Torvald are building himself a nice racing looking Red Hunter.

When will these fierce looking tires be throwing gravel again?

Many years ago all the garages and workshops around her had pin up calendars. Somehow the the smell of oil and grease goes well with nude girls…..Most of the old places are gone and the new streamlined computer filled garages have nothing on the wall that are not approved by the management.

I used to have a steady supply of new calendars……but the source dried out in 2005….but in my workshop the times are not changing. I was stuck in June 2005, my favorite for that year.

My visit to Gunnar was not to inspect the weathervane or Velocette. He had been to Poland to get some HD 750 parts.

So I wondered if he had spent his money wisely……or been clubbing in Warszawa?

First rule of garage visiting…..Make sure that your wife (or similar) are driving….

Double action front brake…..Will he need all that stopping power …..24 wild horse powers…

Where is the long stroke kit and big bore carb?

All of the repro parts are very well-made and look and feel good…So we just have to wait until the owner get them in use….It can take a while….

You can say whatever you want about Gunnar….But he sure got his shopping priority right!

Weathervane

Times goes…Two years ago Gunnar turned fifty. That is something that can`t be ignored by his friends.

He had a big party which included live band and a “build a car and race it competition”. Some of us had wounds for weeks after that session, but that’s another story…

Special friends need special gifts….so we custom ordered a velocette fishtail silencer weathervane.

The gift had three purposes:

1. Every time Gunnar sees the weathervane it will remain him that the Velo is still not ready….

2. The neighbors will believe that her lives an angler with bade sense for form and shape.

3. If another Velocette rider finds himself in the sleepy town of Horten he will find friends..

Why am I writing about this two years after he got it? It took him two years to get the weathervane up…..and it is not straight…Also looks like he will be needing a Billy goat to keep the grass on the roof short.

A good thing is that the Velo are getting worked on. He got the point.

Husqvarna, a brand we in Scandinavia have seen on a lot of products……motorcycles, guns, chainsaws and everything for the kitchen. But I think this must be the first Husqvarna V twin chopper I have seen.

The power plant is made in 1923, 550 cc side valve

The remains of an Emblem.

I had heard about it for while……..A friend of mine had found the remains of his uncle Emblem motorcycle. I was all ears…..He could remember the bike in traffic when he was a kid and had some stories about it. Well my friend is in his eighty’s and can tell a bike ore car tail. He wanted to keep the bits and see what turned up…….Fair enough; after all it was a family relic.

Some time passes and I am out to his place to have a look......... And I ask about the Emblem, after all he is more of a car guy

To make it short, I had to go and get my car……

Well well, what have we here……..in a corner in the garage.

Emblem was made in Angola, New York from 1909 to 1925. They had a reputation to be of excellent quality. I do not know how many that made it to Norway.

This is all the parts, but all projects have a start.….. I will try to find some more of the bike, but it can be a difficult task. The Emblem “lived” close to a deep lake and I have heard many stories of the effective cleaning of unneeded stuff. You drag the things you don`t want out on the ice late in winter. Then you just have to wait until spring, and viola…….everything has disappeared. Did I mention that the lake was deep?

Still original paint with gold lining, amazing that it has survived all the years with use and abuse.

I do not know if the parts are from a twin or a single cylinder machine.

A few blog posts ago I was out riding Sunbeam to look and hopefully repair a Villiers powered bike that would not start……..Well, I have been out riding again and this time he was home.

A lot of different bikes have been made for a variety of purposes, for instance trail, road racing, motocross, police and post-delivery.

But what purpose was this Monet Goyon tri cycle built for? A safe ride after a few stiff drinks?

Made in France in 1925.

The source of the problem: a powerful Villers engine, 150 cc.

Black magic on the road

They were talking about snow on the weather forecast on the radio today. October is usually the last month of riding here. So we decided to go for a ride this Saturday afternoon. Good bikes and good scenery….

They are both black with gold, both bikes are considered old……But the “beam” are nearly forty years older than the “Velo”.

It is getting cold and dark. I had to put on the heat in the workshop today.

Just when I was thinking that there were not many bikes out, I heard the sound of a single cylinder….

Terje was out testing he’s newly bobbed Ariel VB600 from 1947. He has just removed the front mudguard and put on a light repro back guard. No cutting….If you got worried.

Well, a wind screen and heated grips would be a more sensible modification this time of year…..

I will try to take some photos in day light so you can see what it is like…

I have had these original Villiers tools since I was sixteen.

I have never done my own crank balancing; they have been done by a person who knows what he is doing.

But there are first times for everything……

Some time ago a neighbor had a look into the work shop; he had never been there before and where thrilled to see the “old” engines…..

Suddenly he said: “I think I have a tool you can find useful……..”

I am overhauling a unit Triumph TR6 engine and wanted to check the balance factor of the crank. I did some reading of the subject, and got the weight of the rods, pistons, bolts and nuts. I bought some readymade weights from http://www.greeneysgarage.com/ . Put the crank in the tool……..But it was obviously not made for twin crank shafts……The adjuster wheels stopped the crank from turning…It`s probably better for single cranks…

But help is at hand……I borrowed a balancing jig from http://mechanicforlife.blogspot.com/

And the crank was spinning freely….And guess what, the crank was spot on to my requirements, no drilling was necessary!

It is the season for jumble sales. Last Sunday I dropped in to a local jumble to have a look. Usually it is mostly kitchenware, furniture and junk. But sometime you can find some interesting old books.

I picked up a book and suddenly a brochure with a familiar logo fell out…….”The best motorcycle in the world”

It is an interview with Edward Turner (translated to Norwegian), speaking about the development and the advantages of the Speed Twin.

This summer I managed to lure my family to go to two motorcycle museums, this time in Sweden. I will post some museum bikes now and then.

Always look out for the Swedish locals; some of them jump out in the road.

First stop was Eds MC og Motor museum.

Some interesting racing machines:

1958 Norton Featherbed, Norton M50 crank case, homemade cylinder and a lot of handmade stuff. 350 cc.

Also a `58 Featherbed special. Modified ES2 engine boosted up with Jawa crank and rod.

Triumph LW, 1914

This good looking Triumph did “Skogsløpet” last weekend. The oldest bike in the rally but not the fastest….I must have passed it five or six times. The 225 cc two stroke was ridden by owner Harald Raaken.

The bike has an interesting history, once owned by Olympic ice skating champion Ivar Ballangerud. He had the bike on display in his sports shop.

I had to read me up on this model: the Model LW - Light Weight also called the Junior and by some the “Baby” (hence the smallest of Triumph`s motorcycles).

Made between 1914 – 1922. 225cc 2-stroke 2¼ hp. 64mm bore X 70mm stroke.
Two-speed gearbox. No clutch or kick start.

It is a small bike with low saddle height and easy starting. I read that that caused the model to gain popularity in Britain amongst District Nurses, Ministers of the Church, and schoolboys with wealthy parents! (The legal minimum riding age in those days was fourteen).

Skogsløpet are allowed for all bikes that are more than 30 years old so there was some variety in the starting area. A Puch moped and Rolf Vold with a 1916 Indian Powerplus.

I am just back from Skogsløpet. I am posting a few photos today. I will sort out some more pictures next week.

Non Skid tires. Makes me wonder…….When did tire manufactures stop texting brand name in the tire patterns? Did Non Skid also produce underwear?

We are high up in the mountains, the highest point of the route was 1200 m.a.s.l.

Have you ever been to a motorcycle rally where you can borrow fishing rods from the local fish and hunt club? I did not see anybody catch trout’s.

This weekend there is a vintage rally called “Skogsløpet”, held up in the mountains of Norway. So I got the brilliant idea to try to get my wife to come along…..

She has a motorcycle driving license but she is not too keen on my old bikes…..

A riding lesson was needed…..

It is not that difficult….Gear is first up, be firm. Brake on left side. Tickle the carb, ignition on retard, hard kick……Off you go…..

Early morning, I have been convinced by my friends that it is a good idea to come along to a local small auto jumble…….Well, I am always ready for a jumble…

After a wile I saw this big V-twin engine……Iver Johnsen, rare as hen's teeth…

I thought I had struck gold until I recognized the smiling face of the vendor. He is a friend of mine and had brought the engine to use as bait for likeminded people.

He is desperately seeking parts for Iver Johnson, so all ways will be used to find bits. If you have anything for Iver Johnson, send me a mail, stigtorb@hotmail.com , and I will get you in contact with a dedicated restorer.

So why this fascination for Iver Johnson? To make a long story short: Iver was a Norwegian gunsmith who immigrated to USA in 1863. He’s skills was much needed during the civil war and he ended up with a company called Iver Johnson`s Arms & Cycle Works. Iver Johnson died in 1895, but he’s sons continued the firm. They produced motorcycles from 1907 to 1915. So it would be cool to see a motorcycle with so much Norwegian history again on Norwegian roads…

Have you ever seen an Indian Motoplane? The model was made in 1933 only. Kjell have a worried face trying to figure out carburation problems.

I am just back from Denmark and “Skagenløpet”. Here are some photos from a weekend in glorious weather with fantastic people and bikes. I will post more photos later.

I am off to Denmark early tomorrow morning. We are eight Norwegians going to participate in the famous “Skagenløpet”. We are riding from the top of Denmark, a place called Skagen to the capitol København.

All the 211 bikes are made before 1934. Look out for the last entrance number on a 1933 Ariel Red Hunter 500 cc, me no 211.

Gardermoen raceway - Memorial 2011

The best way to memorize history is to try to create an event in the spirit of the happening. It`s more than sixty years since the last “proper” Gardemo race. But this Saturday memorial brought back some of the sound and smells from yesteryears.

Rudge 1928

Having a peek in Hans Torvald`s s garage:
This winter this Rudge came up for sale from an estate of a deceased person. It was advertised as a 1934 bike but turned out to be a 1928 model, 500cc.

The bike has been restored, but a lot of things have to be done again and checked over. There is nobody to ask what’s been done….

A big ML magneto is installed.

Again, somebody has put up something at my work shop door; last time was just before Christmas. The previous sign had the Triumph underwear logo and this has the “new” Hinckley Triumph logo.

So I think they must do it again…..to get it right….

I have not figured out witch Triumph the tool is meant for…..

I think my friend tried to shook me…..He knew that I was going to visit him. I don`t believe that this is the normal storage for the engines. Well I hope so…..

I have always suspected that Gunnar have dreamt of becoming a cowboy….First he got himself a Harley Davidson 750. Suddenly he played Dolly Parton in the car all the time ….and he talks about getting a Ford Mustang. But the long horn scull at his house wall…..? Howdy partner….

Anyway, I had a peak in his garage to see if there was any progress on the important stuff in life…

And what is this? The garage alter? I can imagine midnight masses in the name of Lucas the Prince of Darkness … the sight of a nude Gunnar at midnight with a death chicken can scare light in any bulb….

It was good to see that the imperial sizes on the tap and dices was in majority.

DKW E206 1928

Reidar just showed up at the weekly club meeting with his “new” DKW.

This little bike has spent its life in a motorcycle dealer’s showroom in Sweden from 1950 until Reidar bought it last year and took it to Norway.

Simple 2 speed gearbox, with the crankshaft serving as the transmission shaft. Resulting in a lightweight, compact and inexpensive unit with fan cooling and flywheel magneto ignition.

In 1929 DKW was the world`s largest motorcycle manufacturer.

Reidar likes to ride far and fast on his bikes, but I don`t now with this one. Just see the bikes figures: 206cc, 4hp, 75 kg, 65 kph top speed.

Unusual design of the engine with the gearbox in the cumbusting chamber. It want`s 10% oil in the petrol.

By April of 1928 DKW had made 49.000 units of the E206 model.

Well, I think the photos speak for themselves. Kjetil is trying to mold their kids from a very early age. Wonder if he has heard of reverse psychology, they will probably end up hating Norton’s and………become cowboys

Oslo by Norton.

Last Saturday’s motorcycle trip cased me some problems. The Norton is not the fastest machine produced….The more modern and faster bikes disappeared and I missed the last post.

But the reason for bringing the underpowered Norton to Oslo was to take some photos and ride in the path of the bike that has the same registration number as mine.

When King Haakon returned home after the war there where two Norton 16H`s riding beside his car. The left one has “my” number……

Not in uniform, but happy to ride a bike good enough for a king. The Norton are marking the territory with extra much SAE 50 today because of pure joy to be in Oslo.
