It`s nice when friends arrive on motorcycles. Going to or from a rally, some need a pit stop, some need a bed and some just stop for a coffee.

 

 

Just off the boat from Sweden, a day late. Why did you bring the rain with you?

Johan where traveling all the way from Skåne (the south of Sweden), going to the Indian summer meet.

He had planned to arrive in the evening, so we would have time for a beer and a talk….But the 1940 Harley Davidson UH 80” had other planes….One of the cam followers decided to give up. Luckily Sweden has a lot of old Harleys all over the place. He was helped with spares and tools.

When you are going to an Indian rally on a Harley Davidson you need to bring gifts (Page 431 in the HD rider’s manual. «What would Columbus do?”)

A few days later Børre and Kjetil stopped on their way back from the Lucas rally.

A 1967 Matchless Competition is one of the best and comfortable touring bikes made.  Barely passed by the Honda Gold Wing.

The Matchless have lost the silencer….and later the pipe went off too.

Kjetil needed valve caps and a dynamo gasket for the 1952 Thunderbird.

 

Triumph dual manifolds.

 

 

Have you ever wondered the difference between a Tiger 100 race kit manifold and a Grand Prix manifold?

 

 

 

 

This might be information you did not know that you wanted to know….anyway the left one is from a T100 race kit and the right one is a GP manifold. You can see de similarity with the fiber spacers and the “straight thru tubes” on both items. The tubes go in to the carbs and the head. I have to shorten the tubes for the use of TT carbs.

Grand Prix badge.

A friend of me has this Triumph GP nearly finished. But as you all know the devil is in the details….He is missing a vital part: The Grand Prix badge for the register cover. A real necessity to keep the “that’s not right brigade” at bay….

I know that the badge is made from time to time…..But when you need one, no one is to be found.

Freezing ?

If you are freezing in your workshop you can do some polishing…..At least you fingers get warm.

Weight watchers

I have never done my own crank balancing; they have been done by a person who knows what he is doing.

But there are first times for everything……

Some time ago a neighbor had a look into the work shop; he had never been there before and where thrilled to see the “old” engines…..

Suddenly he said: “I think I have a tool you can find useful……..”

I am overhauling a unit Triumph TR6 engine and wanted to check the balance factor of the crank. I did some reading of the subject, and got the weight of the rods, pistons, bolts and nuts. I bought some readymade weights from http://www.greeneysgarage.com/ . Put the crank in the tool……..But it was obviously not made for twin crank shafts……The adjuster wheels stopped the crank from turning…It`s probably better for single cranks…

But help is at hand……I borrowed a balancing jig from http://mechanicforlife.blogspot.com/

And the crank was spinning freely….And guess what, the crank was spot on to my requirements, no drilling was necessary!

The best motorcyle in the world.

It is the season for jumble sales. Last Sunday I dropped in to a local jumble to have a look. Usually it is mostly kitchenware, furniture and junk. But sometime you can find some interesting old books.

I picked up a book and suddenly a brochure with a familiar logo fell out…….”The best motorcycle in the world”

It is an interview with Edward Turner (translated to Norwegian), speaking about the development and the advantages of the Speed Twin.

But who kept this brochure for sixty years? And did he ever get a Triumph?

Sign of the times?

Again, somebody has put up something at my work shop door; last time was just before Christmas. The previous sign had the Triumph underwear logo and this has the “new” Hinckley Triumph logo.

So I think they must do it again…..to get it right….



I have not figured out witch Triumph the tool is meant for…..

Oslo by Norton.

Last Saturday’s motorcycle trip cased me some problems. The Norton is not the fastest machine produced….The more modern and faster bikes disappeared and I missed the last post.

But the reason for bringing the underpowered Norton to Oslo was to take some photos and ride in the path of the bike that has the same registration number as mine.

When King Haakon returned home after the war there where two Norton 16H`s riding beside his car. The left one has “my” number……

Not in uniform, but happy to ride a bike good enough for a king.  The Norton are marking the territory with extra much SAE 50 today because of pure joy to be in Oslo.

Kjetil, my guide in the urban mess of one way streets and red lights are preparing the `52 Triumph Thunderbird.

Bad company?

This weekend i went in to Oslo to do the "Teddy run" on my Norton 16H. Stayed at my friend Kjetil`s place and got treated with nice wine and barbercue......But the after dinner drinks where quite special.......They where to symbolize the bike brands we where going to ride in the morning: Triumph and Norton.

"Tomsing vann" (loonie water, word play on the TOMCC club name) and El Che grappa. Both wery special:

The bootle of "Tomsing vann" is the price Kjetil won at the Britannia rally 2001. Best modified bike and best cafe racer (Featherbed, Commando engine).

"El Che" a gift from me, carried on my back for miles....Kjetil have stored it for years....Che Guevara was a Norton man.

This drink took 3 years of my life expectancy!

Dirty work.......

When i want to get dirty.......I tell my wife i have to work overtime....



I have a small bench polisher at work. With the face full of "polish cheese" and aluminum you need a long shower and a cold beer .......
